Five roll-off sizes
Dumpster sizes and weight limits
Roll-off dumpsters are sold by cubic yards of loose volume: 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 yards. Each size also carries a weight allowance, and for heavy debris that is the limit you reach first. Republic Services publishes 2–3 tons for its 10-yard and 8–9 tons for its 40-yard.

Republic Services size pages, read 2026-10-20. Dumpsters.com publishes lower typical weights (10 yd 1–2 t; 15 yd 1–2 t; 20 yd 2–3 t; 30 yd 2–4 t; 40 yd 4–5 t); the allowance in your own rental agreement is the one that applies.
Choosing between sizes
Volume decides for light, bulky debris: furniture, carpet, cardboard, branches and most cleanouts. A 20-yard filled level with mixed construction debris at EPA's 484 lb per cubic yard weighs 4.8 tons, already past the low end of its allowance. Weight decides for shingles, drywall, concrete, dirt and rock: Republic lists heavy materials only for its 10 and 15-yard boxes, because a bigger box of concrete would weigh more than the truck may carry.
The per-size pages list every material on this site against that size's allowance, with the roof area, drywall area and slab area that fit. To size a specific job, use the sizer or start from the debris: debris weights, roof tear-off, concrete removal.
